At this point in a young person’s life, making the right career choice is vital. It’s important to focus on a sector that can make the best use of their talent and offer them a sustainable and rewarding future. Retail could well be the answer! But there are some things to consider first.
Retail is changing – at a pace and to a degree we’ve never seen before. Some retailers have been slow to react and paid the price. Others, like M&S, have seen the opportunity and seized it to build a better, more agile, more customer-focused business. Make no mistake, retail is undergoing a revolution. These are interesting times. Our operation is increasingly digitally focused. New technologies are enabling us to lead the way. We’re partnering with Microsoft and True – a data-led retail innovator – to develop new services that will transform our relationship with our customers and their entire shopping experience.
The opportunity to gain exposure to these new ideas and influence the changing retail landscape would enhance anyone’s CV. A future with M&S is a future at the forefront of reinventing retail for the next generation. The future needs young people – and a future with us will undoubtedly provide young people with the commercial savvy, technological know-how and creative thinking to progress.
M&S has long been one of the most trusted brands on the high street. Today, though, there’s far more to us than a network of stores: we’re an international retailer with multi-shopping channels including our increasingly popular M&S.com.
As our business has grown, so too have the opportunities for young people. Below, you can read about our different career paths. But from school leavers to uni students and graduates, we make sure everyone is helped, inspired and encouraged on their M&S journey.
We know that starting out in a new job with a new company and getting to know new people can be daunting. Young people want to do well, to show what they can do, which is great. But they also need support. We believe we’ve got the balance right by giving young people responsibility while providing the training, coaching, advice and guidance – not to mention the support of line managers, mentor and buddies – so that they continue to learn and grow.
