How our colleagues make a BIG difference.

The strength of our company depends on the talented individuals who work with us. Their day to day contributions are vital, but so are their opinions and ideas on how we do business.

With colleagues working across a high number of stores and locations, we introduced our Business Involvement Group (BIG) to unite the voices of our colleagues, and to share what they are saying with the most senior colleagues in the business.

Sarah Miller is Chair of our Business Involvement Group. She sums up why listening goes beyond lip-service for us:

“Our network of colleagues from across the business gives us a unique commercial advantage as they enable the business to hear ‘in-the-moment’ colleague views and feedback, along with giving ideas and suggestions as to how we can improve the business.”

BIG representatives are elected across all areas of our business, from our distribution centre in Castle Donington, to our stores on the high street. These representatives make up local teams who meet regularly and discuss the issues that are important to them. The local teams share their collective feedback with the national team, chaired by Sarah.

Colleagues have a voice that’s heard at the highest levels of the business. Sarah makes sure of this. She joins two Board meetings a year, and also goes along to at least one Remuneration Committee meeting. This means colleagues, in effect, have direct access to the Board. This means they have real influence.

Colleagues make our business different because they are different. Listening to their views allows us to support them where they need it most, enabling them to do their job to the best of their ability and to provide customers with a level of service to be proud of. It’s an empowering way of working that makes working here worthwhile.
