Expanding our Data Community with ScalaBridge

Being able to give something back is really important to us at M&S and this week, five of our data scientists were able to do just that when they hosted a learning event with ScalaBridge - a not-for-profit organisation that encourages under-represented groups into data and technology, including women, BAME groups and people with disabilities.

Together, they invited 30 external programmers to come and learn all about the coding language, Scala and offered support to the wider data community that has been so helpful to them.

As Suzanne Howse, Head of Data Strategy, explains:

“Working with ScalaBridge is a great way for M&S to support under-represented groups in data. It’s also an opportunity for our data science teams to learn from others working on similar projects and to showcase the work M&S is doing using advanced technologies.”

Data is such a priority for M&S, and colleagues who join our team have the opportunity to make a real impact on the business via their work. Not to mention the real buzz around the internal community which has led to regular sharing sessions, training programmes, and even a recent Data Festival which included an animated robot of our Chief Data and Digital officer and data themed cocktails!
