Learning and Development

Experience is the best teacher, which is why M&S likes to throw you in at the deep end. Real responsibilities on real projects, from day one (no, really). But the learnings aren't just one way: we're eager to hear your fresh ideas, to have our ways challenged, in order to grow the business. Of course, it all starts with a comprehensive introduction to M&S. You're never on your own with us. During this time, you'll get a basic overview of our business, along with all the information you need about your new role and life with one of the nation's brightest brands.

Stage one: online application and testing

You'll need to apply online - where you'll take some online screening tests, after which there follows a short period of suspense. This is where your application rises to the top of our review pile. As soon as we can, we'll be in touch to let you know whether you've successfully made it through to the next stage of your journey.

Be sure to check each programme page for specific closing dates as they may vary. If you miss the deadline, you’ll have to wait another year before you can apply again.

Here are a few tips. On your application form, be sure you include all your work experience and clearly state how it relates to the role you are applying for – or what skills you learned in that job which you can bring to our programme. In the online testing, everyone completes a personality questionnaire and takes a situational judgement test. Then you’ll be challenged to show your verbal, numerical or inductive skills, depending on the scheme you’re applying for. It’s a good idea to practise online tests before attempting the real ones – you can easily find some online. Make sure you take the tests in a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted.

Stage two: come to an assessment centre

If we like what we see online, we'll ask to see you in person. You'll then be invited to a day of group exercises, presentations and an interview. Not easy, but not as scary as it sounds. In Retail, assessment centres will take place in January, February or March 2018, although some Head Office schemes will hold theirs in December 2017. There are plenty of tips on other pages to help you perform at your best.

Meet our Moment Makers: Lynette loves how our stores look over the festive season

At that most wonderful time of the year, our store team loves their work more than ever. Lynette recalls the festive season for us. “Christmas is so exciting with all the new products and the store decorations,” she says. “I love giving people suggestions to help them with their gifts. I can really make a difference.”

Lynette enjoys how colourful and full of energy it all is. That’s not the only time she gets to make people feel special, though. “A lady came in wanting a dress that she hadn’t been able to buy online. I found a store that had it in stock and made sure she got it in time for a wedding. She was so pleased, she came in afterwards to give me flowers.”

Our teams are dedicated to providing outstanding service every time. Lynette knows we really value the effort they make. “People have done special things for me too. My regional manager once gave me some flowers and I’ve had praise from the Bank. Once, I won an award for doing a great job, and my prize was an invitation to the Brits.”

It doesn’t all happen on the shop floor, of course. Even at the busiest times, business has to happen as usual. Lynette tells us, “What customers don’t see are all the launches, the stock take and the planning that goes into the sales – sometimes all in the same week!”

It can be quite hard work, especially at Christmas, but that’s why we make sure the rewards are amazing. As well as the festive atmosphere, extra cash, and possibly a permanent role, our temporary staff enjoy the same 20% staff discount card that our full-timers have. Lynette knows what means the most to her. “As well as things for the home, I buy food and gifts for family and friends.”

No matter what your reason for joining, you could be a great addition to our Christmas team. Apply here.

Meet our Moment Makers: in the heart of the Christmas tree forest

Liz was creating special moments even before her induction began. “I was at the Information Desk waiting for training on my very first day, and within seconds I was helping a lady find a trolley!”

Christmas is always a busy time of year, but Liz believes that’s when teamwork is at its best and finest. “I have very happy memories of my first Christmas working at M&S. I think of glowing, twinkly lights, seasonal music, happy smiles and content customers,” she says. “We even have a variation to the deli counter and café uniforms with a festive red making an appearance.”

“I also remember the Christmas tree forest around the store – so much colour in the middle of winter. There’s party food and drink tasting for our customers - and for staff, we have a very special free Christmas themed lunch with live entertainment.”

Liz loves how festive and fun the M&S at Cheshire Oaks is, and how the whole family can enjoy a shopping experience together. But what else stands out for her? The 20% discount. “Where to start… my life looks, feels and tastes amazing! M&S is my favourite place to shop. My apartment has lots of soft furnishings like cushions and throws, bedding and towels from M&S and I’m dressed top to toe in a range of our collection labels – everything from M&S Collection to Per Una to Limited Edition to Autograph.”

Some team members find that a temporary job for the season can even lead to a permanent role. Liz was no exception, and here’s how she felt about it. “Absolutely over the moon and really positive about the future – I feel safe and secure for the first time in years - and so thankful I can earn a really good salary. I’m a heart and soul kind of girl and I’ve given my jobs everything over the years.”

Whether you join because of the atmosphere, the staff discount or simply the extra cash, you could be a great addition to our temporary team. Apply here.

Meet our Moment Makers: finding the right-sized festive dress

Everyone at M&S has moments that really stand out in their memory. When Amrit joined us in a temporary job one Christmas, she saved a customer who really needed help.

“He came in just before closing time on Christmas Eve with a beautiful red dress he’d bought for his wife to wear on Christmas Day. Sadly, he discovered that he’d bought the wrong size!”

“We searched high and low, looked through sale items, and then I spotted that another customer was returning the exact dress in the size we needed. My customer was so chuffed that he couldn’t stop thanking me – he said we’d saved his life. It made his day, but it made mine too.”

Amrit started with us at the age of 17 and has some great memories of that time. “Before, I didn’t realise just how festive it is here for the staff and the customers. There’s music playing, and beautiful decorations and trees around the store. There’s always something going on, whether it’s Christmas carolling or fashion shows. The atmosphere is amazing – it’s difficult to put it into words.”

Of course, it can still be a bit daunting on your first day, and Amrit remembers that well. “I was super nervous and didn’t know what to expect. But everyone was so lovely and welcoming and assured me they were always there if I ever needed anything. In fact, it’s impossible to have a bad day at work as everyone is always so positive and open.”

And how does Amrit describe the 20% discount? “Whether it’s a new top or your weekly shopping, you’ll always find use for the ‘magic card’!”

Whether you join because of the atmosphere, the staff discount or simply the extra cash, you could be a great addition to our temporary team. Apply here.

Looking back, looking ahead.

We know that the heritage of M&S is one of the big draws for new hires – but once they start with us, our people are keen to look ahead rather than back to the past.

As a recent recruit to the business, Izzy is a perfect example. As she describes, “I’m proud to be a fourth-generation shopper of M&S. I was lucky enough to visit the M&S Archive in Leeds to explore the businesses legacy, it’s brought to life 133 years of history and the influence M&S has had on the way we live today! Everyone’s got a bit of M&S in them, that’s what I love about the business, and that’s what influenced me to join.”

Now Izzy is working with us as a Trainee Commercial Manager, her focus is very much on the future – both in her day-to-day responsibilities and in terms of her career development.

“I’m currently working within the Finance and Operations Department. Really key to the departments’ success is forward planning, looking ahead, beginning discussions and decision making well in advance. It pays to be pro-active!”

The range of responsibilities we give to trainees on the Commercial Management scheme are carefully designed to develop the skills, experience, knowledge and confidence to grow rapidly into a management role.

“That’s the essence that makes the Commercial Trainee role so fascinating, “Izzy explains, “It deals with the less obvious responsibilities of retail – from costs to facilities management, logistical challenges for the store and its day-to-day operation, resolving and mitigating any issues”.

The scheme also gives trainees plenty of scope to learn from senior colleagues. “I’ve already been exposed to a multitude of different leadership styles and Managers within the business and therefore been given the opportunity to establish and expand my existing skill set and style of working.”

This means that although Izzy has only been with us a short time, she already has big ambitions for the future, “In five years, I hope to be successfully driving the business’ objectives through my own team, supporting my colleagues and all staff to be the best they possibly can be. I’ll always want to see the business grow and move forward, and I’m looking forward to playing my part in the continuous improvement of M&S.”
