LOOKING AHEAD TO KEEP CUSTOMERS HAPPY

As a Customer Experience Manager in the Retail Operations team at our London office, Joey helps to ensure the in-store experience for every one of our customers is the best it can be.

Not surprisingly, he appreciates the variety this gives him in his role. “One minute we can be trying to develop a solution to improve our customer experience and the next we could be reacting to an issue that’s arisen. There are so many opportunities to broaden your skills in roles that you wouldn’t think exist, but they’re all vital in running the business.”

Joey’s career with M&S started as soon as he was old enough to work, when he joined our Bluewater store as a part-time Customer Assistant. This was where his passion for giving customers a great experience started. One day, a lady collected a wedding cake for her daughter, but had a fall with it outside the store. “Obviously, our main concern was the customer’s wellbeing,” says Joey. “But we also made sure we got a replacement cake ready, just in time for the big day!”

He admits that he didn’t really know a huge amount about the company or working in retail when he first joined M&S, but he soon started to learn all about it. “I quickly learned to love the pace of change. It can sometimes be a challenge, but I really appreciate the responsibility I have to make decisions. And when I understood more about the business, its products, its people and its history, I knew it was the right place for me.”

When he went to study a Business Management degree, he spent his year in industry working for M&S, which gave him valuable management experience. After graduating in 2015, he joined us in a full-time role, which, he says, has enabled him to build on his skills further. “Working at M&S has developed me into a very different, more well-rounded person. It’s given me a number of opportunities to develop skills I’d have previously avoided, such as people management and presentation skills.”

So, how far is he looking ahead? “A long way – and I’ll definitely be at M&S! As for which role I’ll be in, that’s a difficult call. There are so many opportunities around the business.”

BOURNE TO BE A LOCAL SUCCESS

Bourne is a quintessential English town. It’s located on the border of south Lincolnshire, on the A15, some 17 miles north of Peterborough. It has a conventional town centre layout which revolves around a traditional high street, where a small market is held on Thursdays and Saturdays. Small independent shops and hospitality outlets live happily alongside some of the bigger names in retail such as Boots, Superdrug and Costa.

And now one more big name is being added to the mix. M&S is opening a new Simply Food store in the Burghley Centre, right in the middle of the town.

It’s bound to be a great shopping attraction, not only for Bourne’s 15,000 residents but for the 10,000 people living in the outlying small towns and villages. There are also easy links to and from Peterborough and Stamford.

It’s a move that has been welcomed by the town. Paul Ross, chairman of Bourne in Business, said: “It’s absolutely brilliant that M&S is coming to Bourne as we need big names on the high street. This will bring people back to shop in the town.”

It’s also good news for people looking for a great local job. The store will comprise 7,100 sq. ft. of space and will include an In-Store Bakery and Click & Collect service. So we’re going to need Customer Assistants on the sales floor and in store operations, as well as In-Store Bakery Assistants. If you prefer to work behind the scenes, we’re going to need an Admin Assistant. And because the safety of our customers and colleagues is paramount, there is also a vacancy for a Fire, Health and Safety Officer.

The store will be open from 8am to 8pm, so there’s a good chance we’ll be able to offer you shifts that tie in with your existing commitments. And if you live outside the town centre, you’ll be pleased to know that there is some staff parking available at the back of the store, with further free off-road parking available within 5 minutes.

Let’s leave the last word to Isabel, the new store manager: “Bourne is a fantastic location for our new M&S Simply Food store. It has superb road and rail inks into Peterborough, Stamford and the surrounding community are eagerly awaiting our opening.”

GET A FLAVOUR OF LIFE AT M&S

Our internships offer an invaluable insight into our business. Those based in store mean you’ll get to experience what it’s like to work on the front line of our operation. It’s designed to give you a flavour of what working life is like here and equip you with some useful skills, as Katy discovered.

“M&S is renowned for its high standards and being an innovator in the retail sector. So I made sure I took full advantage of the opportunity to intern in their York store for eight weeks. I’m about to enter my final year at the University of Leeds. I’m studying for a BA in Management and this experience offered the chance to see some of the theory not only in action, but in action M&S style.

“My role as a trainee Commercial Manager allowed me to understand how the business works from the other side of the till. I experienced everything from how the numbers stack up and implementing changes on the shop floor to inspiring people to give excellent customer service and creating staff noticeboards.

“I was also given a project based on the new campaign ‘Making every moment special’. This involved creating my own idea for adding value for M&S customers and then presenting this to the Head of Region. The highlights, however, were an all-expenses paid trip to the London Head Office and a visit to Castle Donington which is home to our state-of-the-art distribution centre.

The London trip lasted for two days. I got to stay in an M&S flat and meet the Customer Insight team which was absolutely fascinating. I also completed the Fit to Lead workshop. This was extremely useful and the perfect complement to my on-the-job learning. The Castle Donington trip was about understanding the whole supply chain. The quantity of products that are stored and moved through the site was incredible to see.

“The most challenging part of the internship was learning about how to understand the business, how it operates and the structure of the workforce. In a company as big as M&S, it’s vital that you know who the best person is to ask for advice. This enables us to operate more effectively as a workforce and ensures good communication.

“My personal confidence has developed enormously over the course of my internship. Beforehand, the idea of presenting to the Head of Region would have terrified me but, now I know I can do it because I’ve done it – and enjoyed doing it too. I received some very useful feedback which I will definitely put into practice in the future."

If you’re passionate about retail, I couldn’t recommend this internship highly enough. The whole eight weeks was packed full of experiences and learning opportunities. It also allows you to develop a greater professional network and commercial awareness. What’s more, you get the 20% staff discount. Mine came in handy because I love M&S Crayfish and Mango salads and their Ultimate Night Cream. It was an added bonus to be able to treat myself for less.

But the learnings aren't just one way: we're eager to hear your fresh ideas, to have our ways challenged, in order to grow the business. Stage one: online application and testing

You'll need to apply online - where you'll take some online screening tests, after which there follows a short period of suspense. This is where your application rises to the top of our review pile. As soon as we can, we'll be in touch to let you know whether you've successfully made it through to the next stage of your journey.

Be sure to check each programme page for specific closing dates as they may vary. If you miss the deadline, you’ll have to wait another year before you can apply again.

Here are a few tips. On your application form, be sure you include all your work experience and clearly state how it relates to the role you are applying for – or what skills you learned in that job which you can bring to our programme. In the online testing, everyone completes a personality questionnaire and takes a situational judgement test. Then you’ll be challenged to show your verbal, numerical or inductive skills, depending on the scheme you’re applying for. It’s a good idea to practise online tests before attempting the real ones – you can easily find some online. Make sure you take the tests in a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted.

BRINGING M&S FOOD TO GUISBOROUGH

When plans for a new retail park in Guisborough were unveiled, M&S were at the front of the queue to open a store there. Cleveland Gate Retail Park is a brand new development in a great location near the centre of Guisborough. This gives us the chance to offer customers in the area the full range of quality M&S food produce in a large Food store.

As well as enjoying freshly-based products from the In-Store Bakery, customers will also be able to choose from a large selection of wines and pick up a bottle to go with their food.

Julie, the new store manager, is really looking forward to welcoming the first customers through the doors when the store is completed. “I’ve worked for M&S for 29 years and have had various roles in that time,” she says. “But one of my favourites has to be managing a Food Hall.”

She’s been closely involved in setting up the store and has already been talking to future customers in Guisborough about what will be on offer. She says that, from these conversations, it is clear that M&S will be greeted warmly in the area.

“Through talking to customers, it is evident that opening a Food Hall in Guisborough is a fantastic opportunity and M&S will be very welcome to the town. I’m looking forward to being part of a customer focused team whose main objective is to make every shopping moment special for our customers.”

We’re recruiting that team at the moment, which means we have several opportunities for people who share the M&S values and can give our customers exceptional service. We’re looking for Salesfloor Customer Assistants, Operations Customer Assistants, In-Store Bakery Customer Assistants, a Fire Health and Safety Officer and an Admin Assistant.

The store will be open from 6am to 9pm, so there will be plenty of different shift starting times available, allowing you to work around your personal commitments.

We’re currently putting together a new team to run the store. It’s going to be an exciting few months – especially as we will be into the Christmas season soon.

“Chippenham is an ideal location for our new M&S Simply Food store, an easily accessible site for all. The surrounding community can benefit greatly from both the food hall and café and are eagerly awaiting our arrival.”

As the store features a 24 seat cafe and bakery, there’s a range of roles on offer – and a wide choice of shifts too.

The location is certainly handy. The Bath Road Retail Park is a couple of miles outside town, just off the A350. If you don’t drive there’s a bus stop a few hundred metres away.

Parents & Teachers

We all want the young people we know to get on in life. So we all know how important it is to make the right choice of career. But that's often easier said than done - these days, there is a multitude of options out there.

What's right for one child might be totally wrong for another of the same age. So it's vital that young people are treated as individuals. What level of education have they reached? What's their capacity for future learning? What are they good at? What are they interested in? Where do they see themselves going?

Starting out at M&S

M&S has long been one of the most trusted brands on the high street. Today, though, there’s far more to us than a network of stores: we’re an international retailer with multi-shopping channels including our increasingly popular M&S.com.

As our business has grown, so too have the opportunities for young people. Below, you can read about our different career paths. But from school leavers to uni students and graduates, we make sure everyone is helped, inspired and encouraged on their M&S journey.

We know that starting out in a new job with a new company and getting to know new people can be daunting. Young people want to do well, to show what they can do, which is great. But they also need support. We believe we’ve got the balance right by giving young people responsibility while providing the training, coaching, advice and guidance – not to mention the support of line managers, mentor and buddies – so that they continue to learn and grow.

Choice of career paths

We offer four 'Early Careers' at M&S:
