  • When will vacancies appear online for a specific store? 260

For Customer Assistants each store manages the posting of their own vacancies on the website, we're not able to provide timescales of when open positions will appear. We'd recommend checking back to the website on a regular basis to see if there's a vacancy in your preferred store(s). For our Bakery, Beauty, Cafe, Deli, Kitchen and Visual Merchandising roles, you can register your details with us for any future opportunities.

For Section Manager roles, these are advertised as a geographical cluster of stores rather than an individual store.  We do require Section Managers to be mobile to stores within an hour and fifteen minutes from home and as we sometimes have multiple people pass an Assessment Centre in the same geographical area we will often be able to offer a role in a nearby store.

For our Bakery, Beauty, Cafe, Deli, Kitchen and Visual Merchandising roles, you can register your details with us for any future opportunities and you will be notified when interview slots become available.

For Section Manager roles, you can start your application via our Talent Bank and if successful will be notified when interview slots become available.

  • I've booked an interview online, but haven't received a confirmation, or heard anything back. What should I do? 247

In the first instance, please check that you've selected and confirmed the interview date on your application. Next, check the Junk folder on your email account, as we always send an email confirmation of the date you've booked and sometimes this can end up in the Junk email folder, depending on the computer's settings. If you've checked both those things and still need support, please contact us on 0845 300 3725 and we'll be happy to check the status of your application.

  • How many stores can I apply to? 212

For Customer Assistant roles, your initial application will be made for one store. However, if this store has no interview slots available but an alternative store in the same region has, we'll offer you a replacement interview slot there. You are able to apply for a general salesfloor /ops roles in addition to any specialist roles that you are eligible for such as  Bakery, Beauty, Cafe, Deli, Kitchen and Visual Merchandising as the specialist roles have different application criteria.

For Section Manager roles are advertised under a geographical cluster of stores. The confirmation email only shows the name of the store that the vacancy was created in. At the Assessment Centre, an assessor will have a discussion with you regarding mobility. We require Section Managers to be mobile to stores within an hour and fifteen minutes from home and if successful you will be offered a role at a store within this. Often you will start at a training store for up to 3 months before moving to your permanent role in a nearby store.

  • I've seen/started to apply for a vacancy, but now it's disappeared - what's happened? 211

For Customer Assistant because the recruitment website is a live system, vacancies will only remain there as long as interview slots are available. Once the interview slots are filled, vacancies will be removed from the website. We'd recommend checking back to the website on a regular basis, as additional vacancies are often being posted. If you've registered with us on we'll notify you by email when there's a potential opportunity.

For Section Manager roles, because the recruitment website is a live system, vacancies will only remain visible if interview slots are available. Once the interview slots are filled, vacancies will be removed. If you have started your application we will contact you when further roles are added. If you haven’t applied but have seen a role, then we would suggest that you start your application via our Talent Bank and if successful we will contact you when interview slots become available.

  • Why are there no opportunities showing for my local store? 203

For Customer Assistant roles, this is because there are no current vacancies with interview slots available for the store in question. Only those stores with current vacancies and interview times available are displayed on the website. If you're interested in a role in a particular store, we recommend checking back to the website on a regular basis to see if any are available and register for our Job Alerts.

For Section Manager roles, we recruit regularly for most regions and if you register to receive Job Alerts you will be notified when the region is recruiting. You can also start your application via our Talent Bank and if successful we will contact you when interview slots become available.

  • For Section Managers why do you offer video interviews rather than telephone interviews? 63

Video interviews can be done at any time and at your convenience which tends to fit in with our candidates who work a variety of shifts. The process is simple and straight-forward and can be completed on an iPad or PC. M&S Section Managers do use technology at work and we believe you will find our video interview tool, provided by Hirevue, very easy to use.
